Lives and works in Hertfordshire, UK
I’m an artist, writer and curator with over 20 years experience of running a creative studio.
I’ve exhibited at a number of leading galleries and museums including Tate Britain, Hayward Gallery, Wellcome Collection, CCCB (Barcelona), Science Gallery Bengaluru, V&A, and Mona (Tasmania), to name but a few. My work is interdisciplinary; psychologists, academics, artists and performers have collaborated with me on landmark public projects.
My projects have been covered by major broadcasters and media publications – from Art Review to Dazed, and the BBC to the New Scientist. I’ve worked under several guises, including the fictional art collective WITH, False Memory Archive and A.R. Hopwood.
I was the first visual artist to receive a prestigious Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowship and just this year (2023) I was unconditionally awarded a PhD by Publication from the University of Westminster. I’m currently developing a script for a TV series with director Chloe Thomas and planning for the 20th anniversary of the WITH project. See my work at www.arhopwood.com.
“AT THE CORE OF MY PHILOSOPHY IS THE BELIEF THAT ARTISTS AND CREATIVES ARE RESILIENT, INDEPENDENT MULTI-PRACTITIONERS WHO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR PRACTICE. THIS MEANS MY MENTORING STYLE IS THE OPPOSITE OF WISHFUL THINKING. INSTEAD, I PROVIDE CREATIVE SUPPORT AND FULL DISCLOSURE – THINK FUNDING SECRETS, PRACTICAL ADVICE, SKILL SHARING AND EVEN INTRODUCTIONS.”
AL’S 3 TIPS FOR CREATIVES

PUSH CREATIVITY BEYOND ART
Be as creative and lateral in your funding strategies as you are in the making of your work.

LET THE JOY IN
Remember to find joy in working as much as in the work, and to celebrate wildly when a plan comes together.

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP
Don’t let the bastards get you down.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
AL’S MENTORING EXPERIENCE
Since 2018, I’ve worked as a mentor with artists at different stages of their careers. My goal is to help artists and creatives to explore and push new ideas. I encourage my mentees to be bold and take creative risks, supporting them on their journey to be the best they can be. As well as nurturing creativity, I’m also drawn to the tangible. I want to support artists in making a living, so I have developed academic modules exploring the nature of professional practice, that I tap into with my mentoring.
